Preparing for the Market

Being completely honest, I was woefully unprepared. I didn’t have a grasp on what to prepare. So many things needed to be done and I had thought to do everything, that it felt like I ended up doing nothing. I forgot to make a sign, I forgot to think about decor, I forgot about telling customers that everything was original designs. Missing my time slot for arrival, I walked two blocks with my partner carrying tables and storage. It felt like a disaster. Which brought on a lot of stress for me. It was a huge wake up call for me as I got set up for my first ever market.

Setting Up and Imposter Syndrome

When you are new to anything, I always feel like I don’t belong. Which in hindsight, isn’t fair because everyone starts somewhere. And I’m sure it’s common to feel out of place when everyone around you looks confident, prepared, and organized. I was none of those things. That alone stresses me out tremendously. Luckily enough, I had my partner there to help me through it, I probably would have broken down without him.

My first booth set up

But needless to say, no matter how I felt, the set up for my first market was underwhelming to say the least. And due to this revelation, I made it a point to take note of everything to improve for the next market.

Why an Attractive Booth is Important

Another vendor approached me during this time which eased a lot of my mind. In my head, I assumed that people would be just like me; relatively, at least, new and fresh just starting out.

Not a single person on any side of me was that the case. The jewelry vendor that approached me had been doing it for at least a year, even long enough to be expanding and rebranding. She was shocked at how new I was to be vending at that market. She was extremely friendly and they provided me with much needed reaffirmation on how to improve my booth.

1. Immediate Displays

  • Having something eye-catching to attract people into your booth is very important. Especially with other vendors around that may have similar product, it’s important to really get that attention from the booth’s aesthetic.
    • Going with a color theme
    • Cute Decoration
    • Signage

1. Going with a Color Theme

  • When you have a signature color(s) people are able to set you apart. People can easily identify and remember you if your booth has a pretty signature theme. Setting a color or a couple of colors can really bring people in and remember you.

1. Vibe Decorations

  • Along with Color, having a central theme can bring people in as well. Having specific colors or motifs can bring in the audience that is most likely to be interested and buy your product. That isn’t to say others won’t either, but the booth should reflect what you want to present. Who you are as a shop.

Verbiage or Taglines

The same vendor enlightened me about something I didn’t even realize was important. When she came over to learn more about my booth, it never occurred to me how important it was to mention the designs were original. Emphasizing handmade, which I thought was a given, made a profound difference. Eye catching and intriguing. She insisted that it should be showcased and mentioned.

And for the rest of the market, I made sure to mention it as guests came by. Sure enough, people seemed more intrigued and interested than before. I hadn’t realized it was something that would make such a large difference. Considering the possibilities, just a few visual changes like theme and taglines could really make a difference.

Market Vendor Connections and Etiquette

I am not a super outgoing person. Starting conversation isn’t my strong suit. But as someone new, it was almost vital for me to make connections and see what my peers and seniors were doing. After the kind jewelry vendor spoke to me, it gave me more confidence to reach out to others. Everyone was so kind and inviting. It wasn’t unexpected, but still pleasant to actually find success in something that I was nervous about.

At the market, many vendors give out discounts and free goodies to other vendors which I thought was a great way to connect and break the ice. I didn’t have anything prepared, but luckily I had some stickers I was able to give out for free. Still a bit nervous, I didn’t go to that many vendors, but next time I hope to greet more of them and create better relationships with the fellow small business owners and artists.

Customer Connections

At a market, first impressions and immediate attractions is what really gets people to your booth. Since there are so many wonderful vendors to see, I have to find a way to stand out as a booth. Learning from other vendors on social media, interaction with the booth is important. Being able to pick up and look closely at the product can sometimes convince a customer on the fence about the purchase. While I had some things available, creating a more accessible or interactive booth really could have helped.

A creator and small business owner, Mualcaina who goes into depth about her experience running a booth at a larger scale con, mentions the importance of eye level displays. People should be able to easily see and identify the product. If everything is easily in view and noticeable, customers are more likely to take a closer look. This is a change that I plan to implement significantly. I almost felt invisible because my set up felt hidden. It was very plain and almost out of sight that I’m sure was easy to just ignore. I plan to put more focus in creating a booth that customers can enjoy and feel compelled to see.

Next Market

All that is to say, I had a great time. The experience was very fulfilling and I am so grateful I could be a part of that. As I continue on my growth, I hope to be a vendor there again and branch out to other markets as well. By the next market, I hope to expand my shop into prints and maybe some jewelry as well. I have great aspirations for creating a space for Sweet Vicious Designs that is authentically me and welcoming to others to be a part of.
